Recent rumours suggesting that Leonardo DiCaprio would appear in Squid Game 3 have been officially dismissed by Netflix. Reports had surfaced claiming the Hollywood actor had secretly filmed a minor role for the popular series under tight confidentiality. However, Netflix has clarified that these rumours are entirely unfounded.
A representative for the streaming giant stated, “The rumours are completely false. Reports of Leonardo DiCaprio’s involvement in Squid Game Season 3 are entirely baseless.”
The announcement follows the buzz surrounding Squid Game 2, which premiered on December 26 last year and broke records with 68 million views in its first week, making it the most-watched debut week in Netflix history. To celebrate the success, Netflix has officially announced that Squid Game 3 will premiere in 2025.
As part of the announcement, Netflix also released a special teaser poster for the third season. The poster features Young Hee, the chilling robot doll from the iconic Red Light, Green Light game, alongside a new robot character, Cheol Su, who made a surprise appearance in the post-credits scene of Season 2’s finale.
Directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, Squid Game explores a deadly competition targeting people in financial debt, with the promise of a massive cash prize for the winner. The series gained global fame after its first season debuted in 2021.
Reflecting on the show’s journey, Hwang shared that he initially envisioned Squid Game as a two-hour film 15 years ago. However, due to a lack of interest from financiers and actors, the project was shelved. Years later, Hwang reimagined it as a series, bringing it to Netflix, where it found an international audience. “I never in my wildest dreams thought it was going to be this huge,” Hwang admitted in a recent interview.
With its intense narrative and cultural impact, Squid Game continues to captivate audiences worldwide as fans eagerly await what the next season has in store.
