Matka King becomes Prime Video’s most-watched new series in 2 years, trends across 37 countries

Prime Video has announced record-breaking viewership for its latest original series Matka King, which premiered worldwide on April 17. The show has emerged as the most-watched new scripted series on the platform in the last two years.

Within just a week of its release, Matka King trended in the Top 10 across 37 countries and secured the #1 spot in 17 countries, highlighting its strong global reception. The performance underscores the growing international appeal of Indian storytelling.

Nikhil Madhok, Director and Head of Originals at Prime Video India, said the success reflects the platform’s focus on rooted yet universally relatable narratives. He noted that the series, set in 1960s Bombay, has connected with audiences worldwide, while also praising Vijay Varma’s performance as Brij Bhatti, calling it one of the platform’s most memorable characters.

Set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing Bombay in the 1960s, Matka King follows the journey of Brij Bhatti, a cotton trader who introduces an “honest” gambling system called Matka, turning it into a nationwide phenomenon.

The series is created and written by Abhay Koranne and also created, written, and directed by Nagraj Popatrao Manjule. It is produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur, Nagraj Popatrao Manjule, Gargi Kulkarni, Ashwini Sidwani, and Ashish Aryan under Roy Kapur Films, Aatpat, and SMR Entertainment.

Headlined by Vijay Varma, the show also features Kritika Kamra, Saie Tamhankar, Siddharth Jadhav, Bhupendra Jadawat, and Gulshan Grover in key roles, along with a strong supporting ensemble.

With its strong viewership numbers and global reach, Matka King has further cemented its place as one of Prime Video’s biggest recent successes.
