Kevin Smith has officially announced that a sequel to his cult classic Dogma is on the way, nearly 25 years after the original film’s release. Speaking at the Vulture Festival, Smith revealed that Dogma 2 is in development, with the possibility of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon reprising their iconic roles as fallen angels Bartleby and Loki.

According to Smith, the involvement of Affleck and Damon is crucial to the sequel’s success. “Expect a cameo from them—more than just a cameo,” he teased. “The only way we get a Dogma sequel made is if they’re there. So, count on those guys being part of it.”

Released in 1999, Dogma featured a star-studded cast, including Alan Rickman, Chris Rock, Salma Hayek, Jason Lee, Linda Fiorentino, Janeane Garofalo, and George Carlin, alongside Affleck and Damon. The film was praised for its sharp humour and bold critique of organized religion but also sparked controversy, particularly among Catholic groups, leading to protests and even death threats directed at Smith. Despite this, the movie remains a beloved entry in Smith’s View Askewniverse, grossing over $43 million on a $10 million budget.

Smith also shared plans for a long-awaited Dogma re-release, marking the first time the film will be available for streaming. The re-release is tied to a new company acquiring the distribution rights from Miramax, a move Smith believes opens the door for sequels and even a potential TV series set in the Dogma universe.

The filmmaker previously declined to pursue a sequel when former producer Harvey Weinstein offered the opportunity, following the sexual misconduct allegations against Weinstein in 2017. Smith expressed regret over his past collaborations with Weinstein, pledging to donate all his earnings from those projects to the Women in Film charity.

Smith remains excited about revisiting the Dogma world, even if it risks upsetting some fans. “Some people will say, ‘Don’t f—ing touch it. You’ll ruin it.’ And I’m here to tell you: I will,” Smith joked. “But I’m tickled—I found a way in.”

With Dogma 2 on the horizon, fans can look forward to another irreverent dive into faith, humanity, and celestial chaos, led by Smith’s signature style.
