Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2 triggers bidding war as top distributors line up for rights

The sequel to the cult classic Awarapan is already generating major excitement in the trade, even before its release. Awarapan 2 has reportedly attracted interest from some of the biggest distributors in the Hindi film industry, all keen to secure its all-India theatrical rights.

According to industry sources, several major players visited the Vishesh Films office recently, including Zee Studios, AA Films, Pen Marudhar, Jio Studios, Star Studios and Cinepolis. Dharma Productions, which now has a distribution arm, is also said to have shown interest, along with Birla Studios.

An industry insider described the situation as reminiscent of earlier times when distributors would compete aggressively to acquire promising films. The strong demand reflects the lasting popularity of the original Awarapan, which, despite underperforming during its 2007 theatrical run, later achieved cult status due to its music, emotional storyline, and Emraan Hashmi’s intense performance.

Sources indicate that producer Mukesh Bhatt is currently reviewing multiple offers and is expected to finalise a distribution deal soon. An official announcement regarding the chosen distributor is likely to follow once the decision is made.

The original film, directed by Mohit Suri, featured a memorable soundtrack by Pritam Chakraborty and starred Shriya Saran, Mrinalini Sharma, Ashutosh Rana, Ashish Vidyarthi, Shaad Randhawa, Salil Acharya, Purab Kohli, and the late Atul Parchure.

The sequel is directed by Nitin Kakkar and stars Emraan Hashmi alongside Disha Patani and Shabana Azmi. Awarapan 2 is scheduled to release in cinemas on August 14.
