Anurag Kashyap, a highly regarded director in Bollywood, has made a name for himself with successful projects such as Gangs of Wasseypur and the popular OTT series Sacred Games, based on Vikram Chandra’s novel. Despite reports of a third season, it was ultimately shelved. In a recent interview, Kashyap cleared up the reason for its cancellation.

Sacred Games was a game-changing web series on OTT platforms, featuring standout performances by Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Saif Ali Khan. However, after the release of the second season, the OTT giant ran into multiple controversies related to the streaming content and many projects were shelved including Sacred Games 3.

During an appearance on Mashable India’s The Bombay Journey YouTube series, Anurag Kashyap delved into the details of what happened to Sacred Games season 3. He placed blame on Netflix and stated, “Vikram Motwane was originally leading Sacred Games, but ten days before I was set to begin filming Mukkabaaz, he asked me to join. I had always been interested, but they had concerns about me not appealing to a female audience. However, they eventually changed their stance. A third season was planned, but it was cancelled by Netflix, and they would know the reason.”

Anurag Kassyap went on to say that OTT platforms are now reluctant to take risks following the controversy surrounding Tandav. He stated, “OTT platforms today lack the courage, they’re all scared after Tandav.”

Later in the interview, Anurag Kassap was asked about the leak of the film Paanch. He immediately denied any involvement and suggested it could have been someone he showed the film to. He revealed that it was pirated and ended up in Pakistan. He shared that the pirates even reached out to him through the band Junoon, offering to fund his future projects, but he declined their offer. He stated, “They told me that my film made them a lot of money and offered to help with funding in the future, but I said no thanks.”
