Just yesterday, Ayushmann Khurrana took to his social media handle to announce the premiere date of his next, Gulabo Sitabo, co-starring megastar Amitabh Bachchan. Now, another superstar Vidya Balan took to her Twitter account to announce that her upcoming movie, Shakuntala Devi, will have a world premiere on the OTT giant Amazon Prime Video.

The National Award-winning actress took to her social media handle to announce the digital release of her next movie a day after the release date of Gulabo Sitabo was announced by Amazon Prime Video. Vidya Balan tweeted, “Delighted to announce that you will get to see #ShakuntalaDevi very soon on @PrimeVideoIN with all your loved ones. Thrilled that we will be able to entertain you in these unprecedented times. #WorldPremiereOnPrime #ShakuntalaDeviOnPrime (sic).”

Shakuntala Devi is a biopic of the renowned mathematical wizard Shakuntala Devi who was also known as the ‘Human Computer’ for her innate ability to make incredibly complex calculations within seconds. The biopic also stars Sanya Malhotra, Amit Sadh and Jisshu Sengupta in key characters. Helmed by Anu Menon, the movie was earlier scheduled to release on the 8th of May, but in wake of the ongoing viral pandemic, the producers decided to premiere it on the OTT platform.

While filmmakers with small budgeted projects are seeking digital releases, big banner movies are also developing an inclination towards the OTT platforms. Following the trend, even Salman Khan starrer cop-drama, Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai, is planning an OTT platform premiere and the makers are in talks with video streaming giant Netflix for a release.
