New details about Chhaava reveal that director Laxman Utekar has taken significant steps to ensure the film stands out. Starring Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna as Chhatrapati Sambhaji and his wife Yesubai, the historical drama highlights a key event—the coronation of Sambhaji. A song composed by A.R. Rahman was specifically created for this scene and produced on a large scale.
The music, rooted in traditional Marathi folk elements, includes instruments like the dholaki and tuntune, reflecting the historical period. The lyrics are inspired by Powada, a style of Marathi poetry used to praise rulers of the time. According to a Mid-Day report, choreographer Vijay Ganguly brought in over 1,500 extras to portray the people of Raigad celebrating the coronation. The song begins with Vicky Kaushal’s character performing the coronation rituals and later transitions to a celebratory sequence involving both Kaushal and Mandanna’s characters. It is the only dance number in the film, with other musical pieces playing in the background.
The coronation scene features 700 dancers and was filmed over four days on a set designed to replicate Raigad Fort, where the actual coronation occurred on January 16, 1681. Historical research for the film uncovered a London newspaper article from that time, which described the ceremony, aiding in the recreation of the event. In the song, Sambhaji performs rituals such as the yagna and thread ceremony, while Yesubai conducts the Rajabhishek and aarti. The sequence ends with the king taking his place on the throne.
In addition to Kaushal and Mandanna, the film features Akshaye Khanna as Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Based on Shivaji Sawant’s novel Chhaava, the film is set in the 17th century and is scheduled to release on December 6.
