Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey maintained a solid hold at the Indian box office on its first Wednesday. According to trade estimates reported by Pinkvilla, the Matt Damon starrer collected Rs 8.75 crore gross on Wednesday, bringing its six-day total to Rs 98 crore.
The publication projected that the film could add another Rs 7 crore to Rs 8 crore by the end of Thursday. If that estimate holds, its total Indian collection would reach approximately Rs 105 crore gross.
Different box office trackers have reported slightly different figures. NDTV Profit, citing Sacnilk, placed the film’s Wednesday collection at Rs 6.50 crore net. It reported a six-day India total of Rs 84.15 crore net and Rs 100.38 crore gross. Bollywood Hungama listed a Wednesday collection of Rs 8.18 crore and a total of Rs 91.09 crore. Such differences can occur because trackers use separate sources and calculation methods.
The film has also maintained a stronger hold than Nolan’s previous release, Oppenheimer. Its Wednesday business was reportedly 35 percent higher than Oppenheimer’s corresponding collection. The difference stood at around 10 percent on opening day and increased to 25 percent on Monday.
If The Odyssey continues to perform at the same pace, it could eventually cross Rs 200 crore in India.
Christopher Nolan’s popularity is being seen as an important factor behind the film’s Indian performance. The director developed a dedicated following in the country during the 2010s, and that audience has since translated into considerable box office strength. His recent theatrical releases, including the re-release of Interstellar, have witnessed strong demand.
The film has also made a major impact internationally. The Associated Press reported an estimated global opening of $264.1 million, including $124.5 million from the United States and Canada and $139.6 million from overseas markets. The opening surpassed that of Oppenheimer and became Nolan’s best since The Dark Knight Rises in 2012.
The Odyssey belongs to a genre that has not traditionally delivered exceptionally large box office numbers in India. The response to The Odyssey further underlines the drawing power Nolan has built among Indian moviegoers.
