Aamir Khan to hear final 3 Idiots sequel script from Rajkumar Hirani in coming weeks

Aamir Khan could soon hear the final screenplay for the 3 Idiots sequel. The actor says Rajkumar Hirani is continuing work on the script and hopes to narrate it to him within the next couple of weeks.

Aamir shared the development at the Singapore International Film Festival, where he received the Screen Icon Award. He checked with Hirani before discussing the project publicly, making it clear that he could only reveal a limited amount.

While the narration is expected soon, the sequel has not reached the filming stage. There is no officially confirmed shooting schedule or release date.

The actor has already heard the story and previously spoken warmly about its premise. He described it as an unusual idea that retains the humour of the original while catching up with the characters 10 years later. At that point, he had said the screenplay still needed work.

Aamir has credited Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi with developing the story. He has also expressed enthusiasm about returning as Phunsukh Wangdu, better known as Rancho, and revisiting the world of the first film.

Released in 2009, 3 Idiots featured Aamir alongside R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Boman Irani.

Earlier reports suggested that filming for the follow-up could begin around April 2027, after Aamir’s other commitments. Those plans remain unconfirmed. His latest remarks concern the upcoming script narration, rather than a production start or a release announcement.
