Kapil Sharma’s Netflix series The Great Indian Kapil Show has landed in hot water after allegations surfaced that it disrespected the legacy of Rabindranath Tagore. The controversy revolves around a parody performed during an episode, which some viewers, particularly from the Bengali community, found offensive.

Reports initially suggested that Salman Khan’s production house, SKTV, had also been served a legal notice due to its supposed association with the show. However, Salman Khan’s team quickly set the record straight, issuing a statement that read, “Certain sections of the media are reporting that Salman Khan/SKTV have received the notice, which is incorrect as we are not associated with The Great Indian Kapil Show on Netflix.”

The legal notice was sent by the Bongo Bhashi Mahasabha Foundation on behalf of Dr. Mondal, with legal representation from Nripendra Krishna Roy. The notice accuses the show of mocking Tagore’s work and claims it risks offending cultural and religious sentiments.

The controversy stems from an episode where actors Kajol and Kriti Sanon appeared to promote their film Do Patti. During the episode, Krushna Abhishek performed a spoof of Tagore’s iconic song Ekla Chalo Re, rephrasing it as Paachla Chalo Re (Go with five people). In his parody, Krushna joked, “Akela nahi chalne ka. Ek din main akela chal raha tha aur paanch kutte mere piche padd gaye. Main jaanta hoon maine kaise apne aapko bachaya hai” (Never go alone. One day I was chased by five dogs while walking alone, and only I know how I saved myself).

The segment drew backlash from a large section of the Bengali community, who found the parody disrespectful to Tagore’s legacy.

The Great Indian Kapil Show features a star-studded cast, including Sunil Grover, Krushna Abhishek, Kiku Sharda, Rajiv Thakur, and Archana Puran Singh. Despite the controversy, Season 2 continues to celebrate India’s diverse culture while maintaining a format similar to Kapil Sharma’s earlier shows like The Kapil Sharma Show and Comedy Nights with Kapil. The series is currently streaming on Netflix.

Meanwhile, Salman Khan is busy filming his upcoming project Sikandar, in which he stars alongside Rashmika Mandanna.
