Michael overtakes Oppenheimer at US box office, becomes third highest-grossing biopic ever

Michael continues its remarkable box office run, adding another major milestone to its growing list of achievements. The biographical drama based on the life of the King of Pop has now surpassed Oppenheimer at the North American box office, becoming the third highest-grossing biopic of all time in the domestic market.

The film collected an estimated $3 million on its sixth Friday, showing exceptional staying power despite losing nearly 200 theatres. Its stronghold has been helped by limited competition and continued audience interest, allowing the film to maintain momentum well into its second month of release.

After 36 days in theatres, Michael has amassed $331.5 million in North America, overtaking Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which concluded its theatrical run with $330.07 million domestically. The achievement places Michael among the biggest biographical films ever released.

The film’s success isn’t limited to North America. Internationally, it has grossed $473.8 million, pushing its worldwide total to an impressive $805.3 million. With current trends, the biopic is expected to comfortably cross the $850 million mark globally in the coming weeks.

The next targets on the all-time biopic chart are American Sniper ($350.1 million domestic) and The Passion of the Christ ($370.3 million domestic). If Michael maintains its current pace, it could challenge both films and potentially emerge as the highest-grossing biopic ever in North America.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, Michael chronicles the life and career of Michael Jackson, one of the most influential entertainers in music history. The film has resonated strongly with audiences worldwide, combining nostalgia, music, and drama to deliver one of the year’s biggest box office success stories.

Released on April 24, Michael has proven to be one of the standout theatrical performers of 2026, continuing to draw audiences weeks after its debut.
