Actor and humanitarian Sonu Sood has travelled to Nepal to support communities affected by the severe floods that struck several parts of the country during the previous week.
Through the Sood Charity Foundation, the actor and his team brought essential supplies from India for people displaced or otherwise affected by the disaster. The relief material includes food supplies and blankets, which are being distributed among those in need.
Sonu said the immediate objective of the visit was to meet affected families, understand their present circumstances and provide practical assistance. His team is also speaking directly with people in the affected areas to identify other resources they require.
“We just want to be with the people who are in need,” Sonu said while discussing the purpose of the initiative. He added that the team would make an effort to help people rebuild their lives and return to some degree of normalcy following the floods.
The relief effort is not expected to end with the current visit. Sonu said his foundation intends to continue supporting the affected communities over the coming months. Once the team has a clearer understanding of the requirements on the ground, additional supplies will be arranged and sent from India.
Sonu also described contributing to relief efforts as a shared responsibility. His team has initially focused on basic necessities, but its subsequent work will be shaped by conversations with flood victims and assessments of their most pressing needs.
The floods have caused extensive disruption and a significant loss of life across Nepal. According to figures released by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, 939 people have died, while 3,925 people remain missing. The missing include 592 foreign nationals.
