Widow’s Bay and The Pitt emerged as the biggest winners at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 14. Hosted by Mariska Hargitay, the ceremony recognised leading performances and television productions across drama, comedy, limited series and reality programming.
Katie Dippold’s comedy-horror series Widow’s Bay dominated the awards with a record 14 victories. The show was named Outstanding Comedy Series during its first year at the Emmys, while several members of its cast and creative team also received individual honours.
Matthew Rhys won Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance in Widow’s Bay. He also received the Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie award for The Beast in Me. Rhys collected three trophies during the ceremony.
Kate O’Flynn and Stephen Root secured the supporting acting awards in the comedy categories for Widow’s Bay. Hiro Murai received the directing honour, while series creator Katie Dippold won the award for writing.
Medical drama The Pitt retained the Outstanding Drama Series title after entering the ceremony with 25 nominations, the highest number for any show this year. Noah Wyle repeated his success in the Lead Actor in a Drama Series category for his performance in the series.
Rhea Seehorn was named Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Pluribus. The science-fiction series also earned creator Vince Gilligan the writing award in the drama category. Meanwhile, Slow Horses claimed the award for directing in a drama series.
Tom Pelphrey won Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Task, while Allison Janney took home Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for The Diplomat.
In the comedy categories, Jean Smart added another major honour to her career by winning Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the final season of Hacks, which had received 24 nominations.
DTF St. Louis was named Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. Sally Field won Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Remarkably Bright Creatures. Her victory made her the oldest recipient of the award in that category, surpassing the record previously held by Jessica Tandy.
The ceremony also recognised The Traitors as the winner of Outstanding Reality Competition Program. With 14 wins, Widow’s Bay finished as the night’s most successful title, while The Pitt maintained its position at the top of the drama field.
