Actor Anshuman Jha, who is playing a gay man in the recently OTT-released film Hum Bhi Akele Tum Bhi Akele, claims that he was warned by a certain Bollywood bigwig to keep himself away from such a role and subjects, especially in the non-comic genre.

He reveals how he told by a big producer that it’s equal to suicide to play the character of a gay man in a non-comic film in India. As a production, he was also told that he is hammering his foot to back this concept even when he has the choice of picking any other genre.

However, Jha believes that people need to break these set templates and stereotypes and support the stories they believe in. The actor told that the story looks towards simply normalising, and humanising the LGBTQ+ community in the mainstream Bollywood industry. He feels a sense of retrieval by opting for love and friendship as the main principles of the narrative and he is extremely grateful to writer-director, Harish Vyas and the audiences included for trusting him to play the character at his best.

Anshuman is open to welcoming multiple reactions and feedbacks to the film since it starts a conversation. He is happy that the audience who have liked the film or even disliked the film have started conversations about acceptance when it comes to LGBTQ. He believes that this love for the film is his mother’s blessing. The actor has also produced the film.

Anshuman co-stars with actress Zareen Khan and narrates the journey taken by a gay man and a lesbian woman from Delhi to Mcleodganj. The story focuses on the understanding between the two in regards to the true essence of a friendship and soulmate in the process. The film is currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
