Varun Dhawan reveals he almost starred in Andhadhun; says Kangana Ranaut was also being considered

Even eight years after its release, Andhadhun remains one of the most celebrated thrillers in Hindi cinema. Directed by Sriram Raghavan, the 2018 film won widespread acclaim for its gripping narrative, unpredictable twists, and stellar performances by Ayushmann Khurrana, Tabu, and Radhika Apte. However, the film could have looked very different had things gone according to its initial plans.

During a recent appearance on Tanmay Bhat’s YouTube channel, Varun Dhawan spoke candidly about a film he regrets missing out on. When asked if there was a successful project he had turned down, the actor admitted that one title immediately came to mind.

Varun revealed that Andhadhun was originally offered to him, but scheduling conflicts prevented him from taking up the project. He explained that he was already committed to another film at the time and therefore had to let the opportunity go. The actor also shared that Kangana Ranaut was being considered as part of the original cast during the early stages of development.

The revelation has sparked fresh interest among movie lovers, especially considering Varun’s successful collaboration with Sriram Raghavan in Badlapur. Reports over the years have suggested that the filmmaker had discussed the concept of Andhadhun with Varun while they were working together on the 2015 thriller. As the script evolved and the actor’s schedule became increasingly packed, the project eventually moved in a different direction.

The role ultimately went to Ayushmann Khurrana, who delivered one of the most acclaimed performances of his career. Alongside him, Tabu’s portrayal of the mysterious Simi became one of the most talked-about performances of the year. The film went on to earn both critical acclaim and commercial success, winning several major awards and cementing its place among the finest thrillers produced in India.

While fans may now wonder how a Varun Dhawan-led version of Andhadhun would have turned out, the actor appears to have accepted the missed opportunity with honesty. His revelation serves as a reminder of how differently some of cinema’s biggest success stories can unfold behind the scenes.

Meanwhile, Varun Dhawan is currently seen in Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, directed by his father, David Dhawan. The romantic comedy also stars Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur and was released in theatres on June 5.
