Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas will headline the fifth season of True Detective. HBO announced their casting on social media and confirmed that production on the crime drama will begin in 2027.
The new season takes the anthology to Jamaica Bay, New York, with Cage playing Henry Logan and Banderas taking on the role of Rai García. Further details about their characters and the investigation bringing them together have yet to be revealed.
HBO kept its announcement brief, writing, “Cage. Banderas. Season 5 of #TrueDetective starts production in 2027.” While the casting is now confirmed, the central mystery remains under wraps.
Issa López will return as writer, director and showrunner after overseeing the fourth season, True Detective: Night Country. Her return continues her involvement with the franchise as it moves to a different setting with a new cast.
For Cage, the project follows his television role in Spider-Noir. His film career includes Leaving Las Vegas, Adaptation, National Treasure, Pig and Dream Scenario. He will now share leading duties with Banderas in the next chapter of the HBO series.
Created by Nic Pizzolatto, True Detective premiered in 2014 and introduces a different investigation, setting and group of characters each season. Previous instalments have starred Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Mahershala Ali, Stephen Dorff and Jodie Foster.
With its two leads in place, season 5 is scheduled to enter production next year. A premiere date and further story details have not been announced.
