Maranamass, the Malayalam black comedy starring Basil Joseph and Rajesh Madhavan, has ended its theatrical journey on a triumphant note. Released on April 10, 2025, alongside Alappuzha Gymkhana and Bazooka, the film carved out its own space at the box office and went on to become a major commercial hit.
Directed by Sivaprasad, the film received largely positive reviews from critics, with particular praise for its direction, Basil’s engaging performance, and its sharp, dark humour. Audiences quickly caught on to the film’s charm, and strong word-of-mouth helped Maranamass maintain momentum well beyond its opening week.
What started with a modest opening day collection of ₹1 crore grew into a massive ₹18.77 crore net (₹22.14 crore gross with taxes) in India. That’s an impressive 18x return on the opening day numbers—a rare feat in today’s competitive landscape.
Made on a relatively tight budget of ₹8 crore, the film generated ₹10.77 crore in profit, translating to an outstanding 134.62% return on investment. Thanks to its tight storytelling, unique genre blend, and solid performances, Maranamass emerged as one of the surprise hits of the season.
Produced by Tovino Thomas Productions, Rapheal Productions, and World Wide Films, the movie also features Siju Sunny, Babu Antony, and Suresh Krishna in key roles.
The good news for the makers doesn’t end there. Maranamass is set to stream on Sony LIV starting May 15. The film will be available not only in Malayalam but also in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada, opening it up to a wider audience. Given its strong performance in theatres, the film is expected to continue its winning streak on OTT.
