Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Mehta openly criticized the FFI\u2019s selection process and questioned its consistent failure to pick films that make an impact on the global stage.<\/p>\n<p>Sharing a screenshot of the films shortlisted for the category, Mehta sarcastically remarked, \u201cFilm Federation of India does it again! Their strike rate and selection of films year after year is impeccable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grammy-winning composer Ricky Kej also joined the conversation, deeming <em>Laapataa Ladies<\/em> an unsuitable choice to represent India. Kej expressed his disappointment on X, stating, \u201cWhen are we going to realise&#8230; year after year&#8230; we are choosing the wrong films? There are so many excellent movies made, and we should be winning the #InternationalFeatureFilm category every year!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He further criticized the industry\u2019s bias toward mainstream Bollywood, saying, \u201cWe live in a &#8216;Mainstream Bollywood&#8217; bubble, where we cannot look beyond films that we ourselves find entertaining. Instead, we should focus on great artistic cinema\u2014whether low budget or big budget, star-studded or not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In September 2023, the FFI, under the leadership of Jahnu Barua, selected <em>Laapataa Ladies<\/em> as India\u2019s official entry for the Oscars. The decision was made from a pool of 29 films, including Payal Kapadia\u2019s <em>All We Imagine As Light<\/em> and the National Award-winning <em>Aattam<\/em>. Despite this, <em>Laapataa Ladies<\/em> failed to secure a spot on the Oscars shortlist.<\/p>\n<p>While <em>Laapataa Ladies<\/em> is out of the race, there is still hope for Indian representation at the Academy Awards. <em>Santosh<\/em>, starring Shahana Goswami and directed by British-Indian filmmaker Sandhya Suri, is the UK\u2019s official entry and remains in contention.
