World Music Day or Fete de la Musique is a unique annual celebration of music, which takes place on the 21st of June every year.

Also known as Music Day or Make Music Day, young and amateur musicians are encouraged to perform on this day. World Music Day encourages anyone and everyone to play their favourite instruments in neighbourhood parks and open spaces for people to listen to and enjoy. Music lovers organize free concerts and other musical events to promote music. World Music Day often coincides with the Summer Solstice, which is another great day for feasts and festivities in the Western world.

In 1982, the first World Music Day was celebrated on Summer Solstice in France. The then French Minister of Culture, Jack Lange was the person who started Fete de la Musique in France. Maurice Fleuret, a music composer, music journalist, festival organizer and radio producer was also instrumental in starting a day for celebrating music. Music Day later became popular and gained traction in all countries around the world.

World Music Day is celebrated to provide free music for all music lovers and to provide a platform for amateur and professional performers alike and showcase their talents to the world. It is celebrated to highlight the importance of music and how it is beneficial for the human mind and body.

There are huge celebrations held all around the world on the occasion of  World Music Day. However owing to the pandemic, the celebrations this year are expected to be very low-key and chances of a huge public gathering seems highly unlikely. Many music organizations and companies will organize online concerts, competitions and fests on World Music Day. World Music Day also happens to coincide with International Yoga Day this year.

The theme for this year’s World Music Day celebrations is “Music at the intersections.”
