The year 2020 started on a high note for the Indian box office with Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior roaring at the ticket counters. However, February and March turned out to be a dud for the Bollywood industry. High budgeted and anticipated movies failed to pull the audience to the silver screen in the month of February and just when it was about to bounce back, Coronavirus halted the business at the maximum in March.

After the Coronavirus outbreak reached to India, the government advised avoiding mass gatherings in order to avoid the spread of the virus. While many important events and movies got postponed due to the pandemic, theatres in the metro cities including Delhi and Mumbai are at complete shut. Trade analyst, Girish Johar, talked about the effects of poor response of movies in the first quarter of 2020 including the Coronavirus affecting the nation.

In an exclusive conversation with the entertainment portal, Pinkvilla, Girish Johar said that the Hindi film industry incurred a loss of more than 400 crore INR in the first quarter of the year. Talking about the numbers, Girish added that the first quarter of the last year made a sum of INR 1,050 crore at the Indian box office but the current year so far failed to even come close to the benchmark. So far, the industry has recorded INR 650 crore at the box office and with Coronavirus outbreak, the numbers are not going to move positively.

In addition to the makers of Bollywood postponing the release of their movies, Hollywood movies, which also plays an important role at the Indian box office collections, also got postponed with Disney’s most-anticipated movie, Mulan, in the list.
