Will Smith to play the role of father Richard Williams in film about Venus and Serena Williams, shown through the perspective of their father.

Warner Bros. Pictures has got audiences around the globe excited by releasing a trailer of their new film, King Richard, and November 19 cannot come soon enough for watchers and non-watchers of tennis alike.

Based on a true story, the film revolves around the life of Richard Williams, father of the iconic Tennis playing sister duo- Venus and Serena Williams. Two-time Oscar nominee Will Smith stars as Richard, helmed by Amend: The Fight For America’s director Reinaldo Green.

The opening scene of the movie features the mother of the Williams sisters, Oracene “Brandi” Williams, played by Aunjanue Ellis. The role of Venus is played by Saniyaa Sidney, whereas Demi Singleton stars as Serena Williams, with Tony Goldwyn as coach Paul Cohen and John Bernthal as coach Rick Macci.

Green directed King Richard from a screenplay written by Zach Baylin. The producers include Tim White and Trevor White under their Star Thrower Entertainment Banner, and Will Smith under his Westbrook banner. Isha Price, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, James Lassiter, Jada Pinkett Smith and Adam Merims among many others served as the executive producers.

This is Smith’s first major release since the 2020 sequel Bad Boys For Life. It will mark the actor’s second time playing a real-life sports figure, as he nabbed an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of legendary Muhaammad Ali in Michael Mann’s Ali (2001).

The movie is slated for an international release on November 19th.
