Tom Cruise is proving once again why he’s Hollywood’s ultimate action icon. His latest film, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, continues to dominate the box office—even in its sixth week—and has now officially outpaced some of the biggest names in action cinema history.

Despite a crowded summer slate, the Ethan Hunt-led blockbuster pulled in an impressive $4.1 million on Tuesday and $2.2 million on Wednesday at the North American box office, bringing its domestic total to $187.9 million, according to Box Office Mojo. That figure puts The Final Reckoning ahead of John Wick: Chapter 4, which had previously held strong with $187.1 million in 2023.

This isn’t the first time Mission: Impossible has gone head-to-head with Keanu Reeves’ hit franchise. In 2023, Dead Reckoning – Part One narrowly edged out John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, grossing $172 million versus Parabellum’s $171 million. It’s clear that audiences are still turning out in droves to see Cruise pull off jaw-dropping stunts as the indefatigable IMF agent.

The rise of American spy-action franchises like Mission: Impossible, John Wick, and Jason Bourne marks a shift from the British dominance of James Bond’s heyday. While 007 is still an iconic force, Daniel Craig’s swan song, No Time to Die, made $160.8 million domestically—a figure eerily identical to Pierce Brosnan’s last Bond flick, Die Another Day, and not far off from Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne.

When stacked up against other legendary action figures, Cruise’s numbers speak volumes:

  • Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning: $187.9M (and still climbing)
  • John Wick: Chapter 4: $187.1M
  • Jason Bourne: $162.4M
  • Die Another Day: $160.9M
  • No Time to Die: $160.8M
  • Live Free or Die Hard: $134.5M
  • Clear and Present Danger (Jack Ryan): $122.1M

Even though The Final Reckoning is still working toward breaking even on its hefty $400 million budget, its box office run is nothing short of triumphant. At 62, Cruise has ended his legendary spy saga not just with gravity-defying action but with record-breaking numbers that cement his place at the top of the action movie pantheon.
