Joaquin Phoenix’s adaptation of the iconic supervillain of the DC Universe, Joker, in Todd Phillips directorial brought a storm at the movie ticket counters. While the movie proved to be a critical and commercial success at its finest and became the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever, fans have been speculating about a sequel for the clown prince of crime. However, director Todd Phillips has a piece of bad news for Joker fans.
At a recent podcast, the Joker director opened about the ongoing speculations about the Joker sequel and revealed that there had always been an idea for a sequel even before the movie saw the light but it would not happen anytime soon. “A movie does that kind of business and became that beloved around the world – they had talked to us about it. Joaquin and I had spoken about it anyway as far back as when we were shooting the movie,” he said.
Todd Phillips added that there is no official contract signed to work on a sequel to the blockbuster as he said, “There’s not a contract for us to even write a sequel, we’ve never approached Joaquin to be in a sequel. Will that happen? Again, I just think the article was anticipatory at best.”
The critically acclaimed director also revealed that he pitched an idea for a trilogy to the producers in an attempt to explore the darker side to the superhero and supervillain characters of DC Universe. “I pitched it as three movies, Joker being the first with me, and then these two other movies, with two other directors,” he said.
While Todd Phillips made it clear that a sequel to the Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker is not on the cards at the moment, we might get to see a glimpse of him in the upcoming movies of DC.
