Chiyaan Vikram starrer highly anticipated historical drama, Thangalaan, opened at the world box office with a tremendous response. Leveraging the Indian Independence Day holiday, the movie opened to positive reviews and registered a robust start at the box office with strong word-of-mouth across the globe.
Released in Indian languages – Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam, Thangalaan crossed the 17 crore mark on its first day with the holiday boost playing a significant role. Regionally, the historical drama dominated the Tamil Nadu box office with a gigantic 12.25 crore collection. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana contributed 2.25 crore, while Kerala and Karnataka added 1.15 crore and 1.25 crore, respectively. At the global box office, the movie collected a total of 26.44 crore on its opening day.
With hype before the release and powerful performances from the cast, the movie has emerged as the second-biggest opener worldwide for Tamil films in 2024 surpassing Dhanush’s Raayan. Though the initial numbers at the box office are impressive, the movie will have to pass the weekend test to emerge as a record-breaking movie.
Helmed by Pa Ranjith, Thangalaan is a compelling tale set during the British era, focusing on the discovery of the Kolar Gold Fields and the exploitation of the natives. The movie features the powerful performance of Vikram, which has been highly praised by critics and fans, alike, as the actor underwent a drastic transformation to do justice to his character.
