The dynamics of the box office have changed greatly over the years with the success of OTT platforms. The unpredictability of the theatrical releases and the failure of several big banner movies has led to the shelving of many mega projects. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s mythological epic, Karna, is reported to have the same fate.

To be helmed by veteran director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, the mythological epic Karna, with a budget crossing INR 350 crores was announced with superstar Surya playing the titular character. The production house, Excel Entertainment, had spent INR 15 crores on pre-production and also finalized the cast for the mega project including Janhvi Kapoor, Ali Fazal, Vijay Verma and Avinash Tiwari. However, according to the latest reports, the ambitious pan-India project has been shelved.

A source close to the development of the project revealed that it was earlier informed that the movie had been postponed, but different departments involved in the pre-production have been informed that the movie has been cancelled. “This is very sad for many of us who were looking forward to working on this big project,” the source added.

Karna was a dream project for the Rang De Basanti director and Excel Entertainment. The actors were excited about this mythological epic, which promised to be heavy on special effects and world-class post-production. The film was planned for release in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and other languages.
