Suniel Shetty in talks to adapt true-crime book Black Scorpion into a web series

Suniel Shetty is looking to step into a darker and more layered storytelling space with a potential new web series inspired by real-life crime. The veteran actor is currently in discussions to acquire the adaptation rights of the true-crime book Black Scorpion: To Hell and Back, with plans to develop it into a long-form digital series.

The book traces the life of Shyam Kishore Garikapati, a feared figure in Mumbai’s underworld during the late 1980s and 1990s. Known to law enforcement as “Black Scorpion”, Garikapati’s story stands out for its dramatic turn. After years in the criminal world, his life reportedly took a different direction following an encounter with senior police officer Kiran Bedi during his time in Tihar Jail, eventually leading him to rebuild himself as a businessman.

Suniel Shetty is said to be deeply intrigued by the arc of redemption at the heart of the story. Beyond exploring the rights, he is also considering stepping into the lead role himself, which would mark a return to intense crime drama for the actor. The character’s journey from power and notoriety to reflection and transformation appears to be a key factor driving his interest.

Those close to the development suggest that Shetty sees strong potential in the material for a gripping web series. The mix of crime, psychology, and personal evolution aligns closely with the kind of grounded, mature storytelling he has been increasingly drawn to in recent years.

One of the book’s co-authors has also acknowledged Shetty’s enthusiasm, noting that he was immediately taken by the story’s depth and complexity. His involvement could extend beyond acting, with the actor taking an active role in shaping the adaptation.

As of now, the project remains in the discussion stage. No official confirmation has been made regarding the acquisition of rights, casting, or platform partnerships. With negotiations still underway, more clarity is expected in the coming months as the idea takes concrete shape.
