Shahid Kapoor reclaimed his superstar status with the Blockbuster romantic drama Kabir Singh and turned one of the most bankable actors for the filmmakers. While Kabir Singh was an official Hindi remake of the Telugu language romantic drama, Arjun Reddy, after its success, Shahid Kapoor was signed for Hindi remake of another Telugu drama, Jersey.

Helmed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, Jersey starred Nani in the key character and told the tale of a middle-aged cricketer driven by his desire to represent the Indian cricket team. While the Hindi remake is titled after the original sports drama and helmed by the same director, it stars Shahid Kapoor and Mrunal Thakur in the prominent characters. The remake got on the floors in the month of January, but the shooting was halted amid the Coronavirus scare and nationwide lockdown.
