The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has raised significant concerns over actor Meezaan Jafri’s portrayal of allegedly wearing a “kirpan,” a sacred symbol in Sikh faith, in the song ‘Saure Ghar’ of the forthcoming movie Yaariyan 2. The SGPC has responded by filing a formal police complaint and urging for an immediate ban on both the film and the contested song on YouTube.
The SGPC’s objection is based on the fact that Meezaan Jafri is neither a Sikh nor sports the essential Sikh appearance. Traditionally, only initiated Sikhs have the right to wear a kirpan. The film’s directors have yet to provide a satisfactory clarification on the matter, leading to the SGPC’s action.

In response, the film’s creators have clarified that the actor is actually depicted wearing a “khukri,” a distinctive curved knife, and not a “kirpan.” They have further emphasized that their artistic intention was not to disrespect or offend any religious sentiments.

However, the SGPC remains unconvinced by the directors’ explanation and has indicated its intent to pursue legal action. Additionally, the Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh has directed the SGPC to undertake stringent legal measures in addressing the situation.
SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami underscored the significance of respecting Sikh “Kakaars” and principles, stating that any portrayal against Sikh values and “maryada” (conduct) is unacceptable in cinematic depictions.
In response to the controversy, the SGPC has also called upon key government bodies, including the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Ministry of Information Technology and Electronics, and the Central Film Board of Certification, to take appropriate measures against the film. This incident highlights the delicate balance between creative expression and the preservation of religious sanctities.
