Ryan Reynolds made a massive return to the big screen this year, resurrecting his beloved character Deadpool and bringing him into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The hugely successful Deadpool & Wolverine has fans buzzing with excitement about seeing the merc with a mouth team up with the MCU. However, despite the success, Reynolds has expressed doubts about donning the iconic red and black suit for a fourth time.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Reynolds, who has portrayed Deadpool for nearly a decade, admitted that he feels a fourth instalment could be “a little iterative and redundant.” He explained that Deadpool works best when “everything is stripped away from him and his back is against the wall,” implying that the character’s development should not feel repetitive.
Though he’s hesitant to return for another film, Reynolds assured fans that Deadpool still has room for growth, and there are still exciting arcs left to explore. “It’s still possible to have a fulfilling and powerful story,” he noted, emphasizing that future stories should never sacrifice the fun Deadpool is known for.
Interestingly, Reynolds’ comments seem to contradict previous statements where he suggested potential ways Deadpool could return. In a past interview with Variety, he hinted at several possibilities, including the character appearing in a solo project or as part of a larger ensemble within the MCU.
Despite Reynolds’ reservations, reports indicate that Marvel Studios is already planning another Deadpool film. The success of Deadpool & Wolverine, which brought the fan-favourite antiheroes into the MCU, has created fresh momentum for the character. Marvel is eager to capitalize on Deadpool’s popularity and expand his role within the MCU.
This year’s Deadpool & Wolverine not only marked the character’s debut in the MCU but also brought back several beloved faces, leaving fans excited for what the future holds for the franchise. While Reynolds may be unsure about donning the red suit again, Deadpool’s place in the MCU seems far from over.
