Ryan Gosling’s latest sci-fi adventure Project Hail Mary has made a powerful start at the box office, emerging as the biggest opening ever for Amazon MGM Studios. The film has debuted at the top spot in the domestic charts and delivered strong numbers globally in its very first weekend.
The film collected an impressive $80.6 million over its three-day opening weekend in North America. While it managed to outperform the opening day numbers of Oppenheimer, it fell slightly short of matching its overall opening weekend total.
Internationally, the film exceeded expectations by earning $60.4 million across 82 markets in its extended opening window. Interestingly, the film was initially projected to earn between $40 million and $45 million overseas, making its actual performance a significant surprise. With several markets still left to open, the global numbers are expected to grow further in the coming days.
Combining domestic and international figures, Project Hail Mary has reached a worldwide opening total of $141 million. It came close to crossing the $150 million mark but missed it by a narrow margin.
The film has also set multiple records with its debut. It has surpassed Scream 7 to become the biggest opening weekend of 2026 so far. It has also overtaken Creed 3 to register the highest opening for Amazon MGM Studios since its inception. On a global scale, it now stands as the studio’s biggest debut ever.
In addition, Project Hail Mary has outperformed I Am Legend to become one of the biggest opening weekends for a non-franchise film, trailing only Oppenheimer in that category. It has also secured a place among the top March openings of all time.
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the film released on March 20 and has clearly struck a chord with audiences worldwide. With strong word of mouth and more markets yet to open, Project Hail Mary is expected to maintain its momentum in the coming weeks.
