Bollywood icon Ranveer Singh finds himself ensnared in the alarming trend of deepfakes, as a manipulated video purportedly featuring him endorsing a political party spreads across social media. The video, leveraging authentic footage from Singh’s Varanasi visit, has been altered using AI to replace his voice with a synthetic replica.
Addressing the issue on social media, Singh issued a cautionary message to his followers, urging vigilance against the threat of deepfakes with a post stating, “Deepfake se bacho dostonnnn (Beware of deepfakes, friends).”
The gravity of the situation is underscored by reports confirming that Singh has taken legal recourse, filing a police complaint. A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered with the Cyber Crime Cell. A spokesperson confirmed the action, stating, “Yes, we have filed the police complaint and an FIR has been lodged against the handle that was promoting the AI-generated deepfake video of Mr. Ranveer Singh.”
The controversial video, originating from Singh’s visit to Varanasi, captures the actor’s exploration of the city’s cultural and religious sites. Alongside actor Kriti Sanon, Singh graced the runway as the showstopper for designer Manish Malhotra’s fashion showcase at Varanasi’s Namo Ghat. Their visit to the revered Kashi Vishwanath temple offered viewers a glimpse into their cultural experiences.
