Rajkumar Hirani, the acclaimed director, is currently shooting a film titled Dunki with Shah Rukh Khan. The upcoming movie is one of the most highly anticipated releases of the year, especially after the success of SRK’s recent film Pathaan.
However, news has already emerged about Hirani’s next project, which will be yet another biopic, following his successful film Sanju based on the life of actor Sanjay Dutt. This time, he will be bringing the life story of the former Indian cricket legend, Lala Amarnath, to the big screen, as per reports.
The film will be produced under the banner of Excel Entertainment, owned by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani. According to a source quoted by Peeping Moon, Hirani has been planning a biopic on Lala Amarnath since 2019, but the project was put on hold as SRK chose to work in Dunki. However, after the release of Dunki, Hirani plans to revive the Lala Amarnath biopic and has asked his writing team to finish the script by the end of the year.
Lala Amarnath, born on September 11, 1911, was a right-handed batsman and right-arm medium-fast bowler. He played 24 test matches for India, scoring one century and four half-centuries. As a bowler, he picked up 45 wickets in those matches, including two five-wicket hauls. He also played 186 domestic matches before passing away in 2000 at 88.
The source added that the biopic will not be a typical sports biopic and will instead be high on entertainment. Hirani plans to tell Lala’s story in his signature entertaining style, showcasing his career, his spasmodic brilliance, and his lasting impact on Indian cricket. An A-list young star is expected to star in the film, but the director will only finalize the cast after completing the shooting of Dunki.
This will not be the first time Lala Amarnath’s character will be depicted on the big screen. In Kabir Khan’s highly acclaimed film 83, Lala Amarnath was featured in a few scenes, portrayed by his son and another cricketing great, Mohinder Amarnath.
