More than a decade after its release, 3 Idiots continues to remain one of Hindi cinema’s most loved films. From its sharp humour to its emotional depth and commentary on India’s education system, the 2009 blockbuster still resonates with audiences across generations. Now, there is fresh excitement around the possibility of a sequel.
Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani has confirmed that he is indeed exploring the idea of a follow-up to the iconic film. In a recent interaction, the director revealed that he is currently developing multiple scripts, including a sequel to 3 Idiots as well as a new chapter in the Munna Bhai franchise.
Hirani shared that while the Munna Bhai script has progressed significantly, he is still struggling to lock in a satisfying ending for it. As for the 3 Idiots sequel, he admitted that the idea struck him unexpectedly. According to him, the concept is still in its early stages and not fully developed, which makes the premature leak of the news even more surprising.
Reports suggest that Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi are expected to return as Rancho, Farhan, and Raju. There are also murmurs about a new character being added to the core trio, though nothing has been officially confirmed yet. Interestingly, the tentative title floating around is 4 Idiots, hinting at an expansion of the original dynamic.
Fans of the original film have long hoped to see where Rancho’s unconventional philosophy would lead him next. The idea of revisiting the characters in today’s rapidly changing world opens up exciting possibilities, especially given how relevant the original film’s themes still feel.
Meanwhile, the much-talked-about Dadasaheb Phalke biopic that Hirani was reportedly planning with Aamir Khan appears to have been put on hold for now. This shift in focus could mean that the director is prioritising revisiting his most beloved cinematic universes.
While there is no timeline yet for when the sequel will go on floors, the confirmation alone has sparked massive anticipation. If the project moves forward, it could mark the return of one of Bollywood’s most iconic friendships to the big screen.
