In the film industry, the world of an actress revolves around objectification, even now, with the change in trends and time. One such time, about 20 years ago, Actor Priyanka Chopra had a dramatic incident pertaining to this subject, which she shares in her recent memoir, Unfinished.

Chopra said that at the start of her career she had bagged a big Bollywood film. She had to perform a seductive song in which she had to remove her clothes one piece at a time. She suggested that since it was four-minute-long video, there should be many layers of clothes but the stylist, with no regards to the advice, said, “whatever happens, the panties should be seen, why else would someone come to watch the movie?” Priyanka found it unacceptable that she was used as a mere commodity for titillation.

Chopra had shot for two days already so the producer of the film was livid. He arrived at the sets, angry and furious and charged towards her and that when Salman Khan, who was a super hit actor that time, came to her rescue. She still doesn’t know what he said to the producer which got him back into a calmer state of mind.

Chopra confesses that she never gave the exact reason to the producer as to why she was willing to quit the film because she realised she was a newcomer in the patriarchal industry and it would have been better if she didn’t poke the bear.

She recalls, “Keeping your head down and keeps smiling was the rule for girls and I was already pushing the boundaries. So rather than explaining what happened I told him I’d misunderstood the character and wasn’t comfortable playing the same and that I’d send a cheque to reimburse them for the two days they’d have to reshoot with someone else.”
