A fresh controversy has emerged around Dhurandhar The Revenge just days after its theatrical release, with a plea filed before the Madras High Court seeking a ban on the film in Tamil Nadu during the ongoing election period.
The matter was mentioned urgently on March 23 before a bench led by Chief Justice SA Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arul Murugan. The petitioner argued that the film carries strong political undertones and could potentially influence voters ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections scheduled for April 23, 2026.
According to the plea, the timing of the film’s release raises concerns, as the Model Code of Conduct has been in effect since March 15 following the Election Commission’s announcement. The petitioner requested that the screening of the film be paused in the state until polling concludes, after which it could resume in theatres.
Dhurandhar The Revenge, which released on March 19, has been drawing attention for its intense narrative and politically charged backdrop. The story reportedly revolves around a covert operative returning to India and getting caught in a complex web of power struggles, corruption, and political drama. Its bold themes have already sparked debate among audiences.
The court, however, did not pass an immediate order during the oral mention. Instead, it asked the petitioner to file a formal plea so the matter can be examined in detail. An urgent hearing is expected once the petition is officially submitted.
This legal development adds another layer of scrutiny to the Ranveer Singh starrer, which has already been making headlines for its scale and subject matter. The court’s upcoming decision could have a significant impact on the film’s theatrical run in Tamil Nadu, as well as the larger discussion around politically sensitive content during election periods.
