With the ongoing lockdown to curb the spread of the coronavirus, theatres have been shuttered down for time uncertain and filmmakers have started to release their movies over OTT platforms skipping the traditional theatrical release. While major multiplex chains have expressed their disappointment in producers for ditching exhibitors, actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui has stood up for the filmmakers.

With the debate getting heated up since the past week, critically acclaimed actor, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, has forwarded his support for movie premieres on OTT platforms as his movie Ghoomketu released today on ZEE5. “I can understand the anger of movie exhibitors. But can they offer us a solution? Do we even know when the theatres would re-open, let alone when audiences will feel safe in theatres? How long can we wait? A film like Ghoomketu can’t afford to wait. So many of my films lie unreleased. Ghoomketu was completed in 2017,” said the actor as he claimed OTT platforms to be the only option.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui also expressed his disappointment in movie exhibitors as many of his long-ago finished projects are yet to be released. “Two of my other unreleased films which I’m very proud and would love to see release on the digital platform are Mangesh Hadawale’s Dekh Indian Circus and Geetu Mohandas’s Liars Dice. Both were completed 9 years ago and are yet to be exhibited in theatres. Why haven’t the movie exhibitors looked at these two films? I am very proud of both films and I look forward to their release on the OTT platform,” the actor further added.

Helmed by Pushpendra Nath Misra, Ghoomketu is a humorous take on an aspiring writer hailing from Uttar Pradesh and his struggles to make it big in the Bollywood in the given thirty days. Starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the titular character, the comedy-drama premiered on the OTT platform, ZEE5, and received mixed reviews from the movie buffs.
