The Mumbai Police have launched an investigation into the unauthorized distribution of Chhaava, the historical drama starring Vicky Kaushal as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. A case has been registered against unidentified individuals following a complaint by Rajat Rahul Haksar, CEO of August Entertainment—an anti-piracy agency hired by Maddock Films.
Haksar flagged 1,818 internet links where the film had been illegally shared, violating copyright laws and impacting its theatrical earnings. The case has been filed under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Copyright Act, Cinematograph Act, and Information Technology Act. According to officials, the South Region Cyber Police have begun tracking down the IP addresses linked to these piracy sources.
Released on February 14, 2025, Chhaava is a Hindi-language historical action film directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films. The movie is based on Shivaji Sawant’s Marathi novel of the same name and depicts the life of Sambhaji Maharaj, the second ruler of the Maratha Empire. Alongside Vicky Kaushal, the film stars Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna.
Despite its strong historical narrative and stellar performances, Chhaava has faced a slowdown at the box office, possibly due to recent controversies surrounding Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb and the ensuing violent clashes in Nagpur.
According to industry tracker Sacnilk.com, the film earned approximately ₹1.67 crore (India net) on its thirty-fifth day across all languages, with an overall Hindi occupancy rate of 8.57% on Thursday.
With cyber authorities cracking down on piracy, Chhaava’s team remains hopeful that the film will continue to draw audiences and receive the recognition it deserves.
