Starring Mammootty in the lead, the Malayalam language period drama Mamangam has been making headlines lately for the creative dispute between the makers of the movie. Director Sanjeev Pillai, who had also written the screenplay of the epic drama, had a major fallout with the producer Venu Kunnappilly and the former was fired from the venture.
After creating a lot of hype, Sanjeev Pillai directed the first half of the period drama but the makers of the movie were not happy with the pace of his direction and after a while, the relationship between them went sour. Sanjeev Pillai took the issue to police followed by court hearings post his fallout with the producers went public.
Sharing his side, executive producer of Mamangam, Vivek Ramadevan told Indian Express that the step was taken in the interest of the movie and it was not a pleasant thing to do. “We were left with no option but to take that step. He (Sanjeev) went to courts, and courts upheld that whatever we did was right, including Kerala High Court. So, that’s been an unpleasant experience,” he added.
Post the exit of Sanjeev Pillai, M Padmakumar took command of the director’s hat while Shanker Ramakrishnan was given the responsibility to adapt the original screenplay of Sanjeev Pillai from the scratch. “We have not retained anything from whatever (Sanjeev had done), it is a completely new film,” Vivek Ramadevan said.
With Mammootty leading the cast, the multilingual Mamangam is set to release on 12 December 2019.
