The Coronavirus pandemic changed the entertainment sector and it witnessed an unprecedented growth of OTT platforms. While the OTT giants have been doing greatly with many more big-budget projects seeking the online streaming route, the OTT consumers will now have to wait longer to watch Bollywood movies online after their theatrical release.
The months of lockdown forced the movie producers to directly release their movies over the OTT platforms and we saw a trend in OTT deals for even movies that were traditionally released in theatres first. After poor footfalls at the box office with the COVID-19 scare, the movie producers and exhibitors had earlier agreed to release the films on OTT four weeks after it was released in cinemas. However, with the recent positive response at the theatres, the dynamics have changed.
The four-week rule was implemented to compensate for the losses faced by the producers by the poor box office business. However, with the shift in the trend and the 100% occupancy at the theatres, all the parties have agreed to revise the timeline and agreed upon releasing movies over OTT platforms only after completing 8 weeks in cinemas. The said rule will come into effect from August 1.
This means that all the films which will be released in cinemas from next month like Raksha Bandhan, Laal Singh Chaddha, Liger, and Brahmastra among others will premiere on OTT after completing eight weeks in cinemas. Fans of such movies waiting for their digital release will now have to wait a little longer or experience them on the big screen. The projects opting for direct-digital release will have no impact by the recent development.
