The fictional period drama based on the novel Empire of the Moghul by Alex Rutherford premiered on Disney+ Hotstar on 27 August and it managed to become the talk of the town. Created by Nikkhil Advani and helmed by Mitakshara Kumar, The Empire features Kunal Kapoor, Dino Morea, Drashti Dhami and Aditya Seal among others but the recognition to the web series was accompanied by trolls.

After the premiere of The Empire on the streaming platform, Disney+ Hotstar, netizens trolled it by calling it a low-budgeted Indian version of the popular American fantasy series, Game Of Thrones. Responding to the trolls, actor Kunal Kapoor, who plays the key role of Babur in the series, called the comparisons unnecessary and tragic. “I think these are unnecessary comparisons. Comparisons will be made and it is tragic that it is Game Of Thrones because it is a fantastic show,” he said.

Kunal further explained that The Empire is a different show with a different story and different characters and hence comparison with a show from a completely different genre is not logical. “If people are comparing the scale (to GOT) then great, it’s wonderful, but I don’t think there is any other commonality between that show and this show,” he added.

Dino Morea who plays another character in the period drama also opened up on being compared with Ranveer Singh’s Alauddin Khilji in the movie Padmaavat. “If you compare me to someone who has done a fantastic job then chalo theek hai (it is okay). I’m okay with it. Because Ranveer has done a fantastic job as Khilji. I have not been influenced by what he did as Khilji. I have tried to introduce my madness. So I am ok with the comparison as long as it is to the best,” he said.
