Filmmaker Karan Johar has finally put an end to ongoing speculation about a sequel to his iconic film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. The 2001 family drama, which featured a star-studded cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor Khan, continues to hold a special place in Bollywood’s history.
Addressing the rumours, Johar made it clear that there are no plans to bring the story back in the form of a sequel or spin-off. Speaking during a recent interaction, he stated that Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham 2 is not happening, putting all speculation to rest.
He also shared his reasoning behind the decision, explaining that the film’s emotional connection with audiences is something he does not want to disturb. According to Johar, the film carries a deep sense of nostalgia for multiple generations who grew up watching it. From its emotional moments to its music and characters, the film continues to live on in people’s memories.
Johar emphasised that revisiting such a beloved story could risk diluting its impact. He expressed gratitude for being able to create a film that has stood the test of time and continues to be loved years after its release. For him, preserving that legacy is more important than attempting to recreate its success.
For many viewers, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham remains more than just a film. It is a cultural touchstone that explored family relationships, emotional conflicts and reconciliation in a grand, larger-than-life style. Alongside its lead cast, the film also featured memorable performances by Farida Jalal, Sushma Seth, Alok Nath, Johnny Lever, Himani Shivpuri, Simone Singh and a special appearance by Rani Mukerji.
With Johar firmly ruling out a sequel, it is clear that the filmmaker prefers to let the film remain untouched, preserving the nostalgia and love that audiences continue to associate with it.
