The Indian Telugu-language epic sci-fi film Kalki 2898 AD was released two months ago amid much anticipation and, despite mixed reviews, the movie managed to surpass many records. Helmed by Nag Ashwin, the film features several superstars in key roles, including Prabhas, Kamal Haasan, Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone, and continues to run at some theatres. However, the makers have already begun filming the next part.

In a recent media interaction, the film director Nag Ashwin updated on the status of the sci-fi sequel, confirming that the second part is already undergoing production. The filmmaker revealed that the team has already completed a shooting schedule of 20 days and assured that the second instalment to the franchise will take less completion time than the first part.

Interestingly, Kalki 2898 AD took around five years to develop and faced constant delays given the VFX-heavy plot. The movie, which was released in June, left the fans on a suspenseful cliffhanger, eager for more, and the sequel promises to answer many questions. The second instalment will also introduce many new characters portrayed by popular faces continuing the story.

In the interaction, Ashwin emphasized that the movie is inspired by the Mahabharata and he felt it was important to enlighten audiences to our own stories. “It didn’t come to a point where we had to be overtly cautious. What’s written in Mahabharata, we kept it straightforward that way. I felt it was the right time to tell this story. There is a huge audience in our country- not just in cities, but smaller towns who embrace stories like Marvel and Star Wars. I felt we should explore our homegrown superheroes, it is very Indian,” he added.

While the fans will still have to wait for more updates on the sequel to Kalki 2898 AD, it is certain that the production has already begun, and the story will continue on the big screen soon.
