A biopic on India’s first-ever Home chef, Tarla Dalal, is in the works and renowned filmmaker Ronnie Screwvala is bankrolling the project. Critically-acclaimed actor Huma Qureshi will be essaying the role of the late chef in the biopic and the makers announced the filming of the movie just today.

Helmed by Piyush Gupta, the food filler titled Tarla will feature Huma Qureshi in a different avatar as she gets into the shoes of an Indian chef who changed the cooking in Indian households. “Tarla’s story is a lot more than her being an iconic chef. It’s a story about a working mother who single-handedly changed the face of vegetarian cooking in India and paved way for many such home cooks and start-ups to aspire and achieve their dreams,” adds co-producer, Ashwiny Iyer.

Sharing her excitement about playing the character on screen, Huma Qureshi gets nostalgic about her memories of the works of Tarla Dalal and shares that her mother used to try Tarla’s recipe for her school tiffin. “I also clearly remember the time when I helped mom make Tarla‘s homemade mango ice cream. This role has taken me back to those sweet childhood memories and I am very thankful to Ronnie, Ashwini, and Nitesh for having faith in me to play this awe-inspiring character,” she further added as she felt grateful to be a part of the project.

Tarla Dalal was an Indian food writer, chef, cookbook author, and host of cooking shows. She was the first Indian to have been awarded a Padmashree award in the culinary skills category in 2007. Featuring Huma Qureshi as the legendary chef, the movie is slated for a release next year.
