The live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon, based on the beloved 2010 animated fantasy film, has been enjoying a strong run at the global box office. Released in theatres nearly two months ago, the film has received widespread praise from critics and audiences alike, and has now crossed an impressive $619 million worldwide.
This puts the film ahead of several major 2025 releases, including Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Sinners, and 28 Years Later. It has even outpaced classics like The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Casino Royale, and The Passion of the Christ in terms of lifetime global earnings.
Now, the live-action How to Train Your Dragon is close to passing another fan-favourite blockbuster, James Mangold’s Logan (2017), which starred Hugh Jackman in his final appearance as Wolverine in his universe. With less than $140,000 separating the two titles, the dragon-filled adventure is on the verge of reaching yet another major milestone.
However, as its theatrical run enters its final stretch, the film’s momentum is beginning to slow. Still, the box office success so far is a testament to the enduring popularity of the franchise and the strong reception for its live-action debut.
Directed by Dean DeBlois, who also helmed the original animated trilogy, the film stars Mason Thames as Hiccup, a young Viking outsider who challenges his tribe’s beliefs through an unexpected bond with a feared Night Fury dragon. Gerard Butler reprises his role as Stoick the Vast, Hiccup’s powerful but traditional father. Together, their journey reshapes the future of Vikings and dragons forever.
