Rumours are swirling about the next project for actor Henry Cavill since his departure from the DCEU as Superman. Reports suggest he may join the MCU as Captain Britain, but now it seems he may be collaborating with Robert Downey Jr. for the third instalment of the Sherlock Holmes movie franchise. The actor has previously played the role of the iconic British detective in Netflix’s Enola Holmes film series.
The previous two films in the Sherlock Holmes franchise, led by Robert Downey Jr. as the titular detective and Jude Law as his trusted sidekick John H. Watson, were released in 2009 and 2011. According to trusted sources from Giant Freakin Robot, Cavill is in talks to join the cast of the third film. Although the roles of Moriarty and Mycroft Holmes have already been filled by Jared Harris and Stephen Fry, respectively, it is unknown what role Cavill might play.
Sources suggest that Cavill may be cast as the main antagonist, a captain of industry, in Sherlock Holmes 3. The film is expected to take place in America. The movie will be directed by Dexter Fletcher, who previously directed the Freddie Mercury biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody. Guy Ritchie, who directed the previous two films, will produce this time around.
Although Cavill has faced some disappointments in his career, including being dropped from the DCEU and exiting The Witcher, his potential involvement in the next Sherlock Holmes film has generated excitement among his fans.
