Ghooskhor Pandat controversy deepens as FWICE warns of action

The controversy surrounding the upcoming Netflix film Ghooskhor Pandat, produced by Neeraj Pandey and starring Manoj Bajpayee, has intensified further after a major industry body raised strong objections to the film’s title and warned of serious consequences if it is not withdrawn.

The Federation of Western India Cine Employees, which represents thousands of technicians, artists, and workers across multiple film associations, has formally opposed the title and urged the makers to reconsider it immediately. The organisation has cautioned that failure to do so could lead to industry-wide action against projects linked to the film’s producers.

The backlash began soon after the teaser was unveiled, with several groups and individuals calling the title offensive. Critics argue that the phrase combines “ghooskhor”, a term commonly used to describe someone who takes bribes, with “Pandat”, a word associated with the Brahmin community. Many believe this pairing risks reinforcing harmful stereotypes and hurting religious and caste sentiments.

In its communication to producer bodies and major streaming platforms, the federation stated that the title appears to single out a particular community in a derogatory manner. It stressed that cinema has a wide social impact and must be mindful of language that could provoke misunderstanding or disturb social harmony. The body also warned that if the issue is not resolved, it may advise its members to refrain from associating with future projects from the same production house.

The matter has now spilt into legal and political territory as well. An FIR has reportedly been registered in Lucknow, accusing the film’s creators of hurting caste sentiments. Meanwhile, a writ petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking a halt to the film’s release, citing the title as communally offensive.

Political and religious organisations have also weighed in. Several groups have publicly criticised the title and demanded action, increasing pressure on both the filmmakers and the streaming platform. Amid the growing backlash, Netflix has reportedly removed the teaser and related promotional material from its platforms.

Addressing the situation, producer Neeraj Pandey issued a statement acknowledging that the title had hurt some viewers. He clarified that the film is a fictional cop drama focused on an individual character and not intended to comment on or represent any caste, religion, or community. As a precautionary step, he confirmed that promotional content had been taken down temporarily.

Manoj Bajpayee also responded, expressing respect for the concerns raised. He stated that his role was meant to portray a flawed individual on a personal journey and was never intended as a statement about any community.

With objections mounting from multiple fronts, the fate of Ghooskhor Pandat now hangs in the balance, as both the makers and Netflix face growing pressure to decide whether the project can move forward in its current form.
