It’s been grey and drizzly in Shanghai but inside of the Long Museum, the guests experience an acid-bright coloured discotheque by the house of Dior.
Under the creative direction of Maria Grazia Chiuri, the French fashion house showcased its ready-to-wear Fall 2021 collection at Shanghai Fashion Week. Shanghai has commendably hosted one of the first runway shows for the naked eye with pre-pandemic attendance levels since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, conforming with the local health regulations.
It was the first time, the fashion house has staged a runway show for women’s pre-fall collection. Graced with 1000 guests that included actress Zhang Ziyi, Carina Lau, Ora Yang, TFBoys’ Karry Wang and pianist Li Yundi, the show was staged on a circular set decked up with giant disco balls. A mashup of futuristic metallics, 50’s silhouettes and feminine high contrast leopard prints the event was pop-inspired.

Dior’s longtime muse Mitzah Bricardi and designer Elio Fiorucci were the inspirations behind the collection. They pulled out varied concepts for the theme and modified them to classic Dior silhouettes.
As the models walked down the stairs to a leopard print floor, surrounded by flashing walls with mirror balls on the ceiling, Dior’s psychedelic disco and the pop-inspired collection got its perfect backdrop.
The show opened with metallic forms, in different colours, material and silhouettes. Taking their classic silhouettes, Dior revisited its signature timeless Bar jacket in many colours and patterns. There were five models, each in a different burst of neon and bright red numbers that paid homage to the House’s archive.
The show-stealer was a shimmering red, translucent jumpsuit with a black collar, utility pockets and belt accents. Another highlight was Fiorucci’s symbolic leopard print which was glistening in a variety of transparent coats. The collection added a new dimension to fashion and brought back excitement after months of lockdown.
The show signed off with four identical outfits in different colours where gleaming silver tops were paired with neon-coloured skirts. With a letter on their chest, spelling ‘DIOR’, were each of these models that walked the runway. Giorgio Moroder’s tunes and words by Maripol concluded the show with the spoken words “we are going out tonight.”
The see-now-buy-now event allowed the customers to preorder the collection which will be available in the Dior store in two weeks and also on the Dior website and a mini-program on WeChat. Few items such as the new medium-sized version of Caro Handbag was available for immediate delivery which is launching exclusively in China for a month.
