2022 was a disappointing year for Bollywood, as only a few films were successful at the box office. On the other hand, South Indian dubbed movies like RRR and KGF: Chapter 2 performed exceptionally well, leading to numerous discussions, debates and analyses on the underperformance of Hindi films. The recent triumph of the Hollywood film Avatar: The Way of Water has also sparked discussions.
According to Kabir Khan, a filmmaker, there has been excessive analysis and only good films succeed. In a recent interview with Bollywood Hungama, he stated that films like RRR and Avatar 2 would have performed well regardless, as they are good films. He believes that too much emphasis is being placed on the divides between Hollywood and Bollywood, Bollywood and the South, and that people are simply interested in good films, regardless of where they come from. The filmmaker expressed his happiness that whenever a film does well, it demonstrates that people are still invested in films.
Kabir also spoke about the immense popularity of Shah Rukh Khan’s return in Pathaan, which brought large crowds back to theatres. According to him, “That film brought it back.” He acknowledges that some films may not perform well after Pathaan, but considers this to be a natural occurrence in the industry. Kabir avoids excessive analysis and categorizing everything into trends.
