After nearly two decades of anticipation, Dostana 2 is finally back on track. Karan Johar is gearing up to roll cameras on the much-awaited sequel by the end of 2025, with filming scheduled both in India and abroad. The revamped project promises a fresh storyline, a dynamic cast, and a direct-to-digital release on Netflix.
According to industry insiders, Vikrant Massey and Lakshya are set to headline this new chapter. A source revealed to Bollywood Hungama, “Karan is reinventing the Dostana franchise with two incredibly talented actors. The film has an out-and-out hilarious script, and production is scheduled to kick off late 2025.”
Unlike the original Dostana, released in 2008, which became a theatrical hit for its bold concept and comic timing, Dostana 2 will take a modern digital-first approach. It will be directed by Shauna Gautam, known for her work on Nadaniyaan, and promises to be a vibrant, popcorn entertainer with heart.
“This isn’t just about laughs,” a source explained. “The casting of Vikrant and Lakshya is about celebrating talent and pushing forward representation. Karan wants Dostana 2 to be funny, emotional, and socially meaningful.”
The plot will revolve around Vikrant Massey and Lakshya playing a gay couple, a significant and progressive step in mainstream Indian storytelling. While more casting details are under wraps, the makers are reportedly in talks with a popular young actress to join the cast, adding further depth to the ensemble.
With Dostana 2 being designed as a Netflix original, expectations are high. The project aims to blend humour, romance, and cultural relevance in a way that resonates with today’s audience.
