After a spectacular $182 million debut over Memorial Day weekend, Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch remake has officially crossed a jaw-dropping $915 million at the global box office, according to Box Office Mojo. With numbers like that, it’s no surprise the studio wasted no time greenlighting a sequel.

Fittingly announced on June 26 — a nod to Stitch’s designation as Experiment 626 — Disney shared a cheeky teaser video featuring Stitch causing chaos while joyriding through the studio lot. The message was loud and clear: Lilo & Stitch 2 is happening.

The 2024 remake reimagined the beloved 2002 animated tale of an unlikely bond between a mischievous alien and a lonely Hawaiian girl. While there were updates and story shifts, fans embraced the emotional core and playful energy of the reboot, proving Stitch’s charm still runs deep.

The sequel announcement comes unusually fast for a big-budget Disney franchise, signalling the studio’s urgency to capitalise on the film’s massive success. Insiders speculate that if the script is finalised by year’s end, filming could begin in 2025 with a potential 2027 release. However, if Disney opts to take a more measured approach, the follow-up could arrive a bit later.

Interestingly, the ending of the live-action film took a detour from its animated predecessor, showing Nani leaving Hawaii to study marine biology, while Lilo and Stitch stay behind. A subtle hint of alien tech at the end suggests that their paths may reunite sooner than expected.

Die-hard fans were also treated to exciting Easter eggs, including nods to beloved characters from Lilo & Stitch: The Series, like Angel, Reuben, and Experiment 627. These teases hint at the possibility of a larger cinematic universe, potentially turning Lilo & Stitch into a multi-film franchise.

Disney already has a treasure trove of content from the original series and its animated sequels, such as Stitch Has a Glitch (2005), making the creative possibilities for Lilo & Stitch 2 practically endless. Whether it’s new adventures, new experiments, or new heartwarming Ohana moments, fans clearly have much to look forward to.

Box Office Breakdown (via Box Office Mojo):

  • Domestic Total: $391 million
  • International Total: $524 million
  • Worldwide Cume: $915 million+

With that kind of box office power and fan love, it looks like Stitch is here to stay — and he’s bringing plenty of chaos and heart along for the ride.
